A dental veneer is an extremely thin wafer of porcelain or resin, the veneer is bonded to the front of a tooth, that surface that is visible. Dental veneers in Mount Prospect are ideal for those patients that have severely discolored teeth or teeth with edge chips or surface imperfections. Veneers brighten and whiten teeth and enhance a smile.
Why use veneers?
Veneers are often used in lieu of a crown, when the conditions are right they can be used to make minor changes in the shape of tooth, change the color and mask imperfections. They can be used to close gaps between teeth and enhance teeth that are worn down or chipped. When the procedure is done properly, dental veneers will last for years.
What is the procedure?
The entire procedure is relatively pain free; many patients will not need any anesthesia. Usually the entire process is completed in three visits to the dentist; the first visit is dedicated to planning the procedure, tooth preparation takes place during the second visit and finally the veneers are bonded to the patient’s teeth.
Although dental veneers in Mount Prospect are extremely thin, there still is a need to prepare the teeth to accept them. The teeth are buffed, removing just enough surface material to allow for the veneer. Once the teeth have been prepared, a mold is taken. The mold is used by dental technicians in the lab.
If the patient opts for composite resin veneers the work can be done in a day, the dentist adds material to the teeth and then sculpts and polishes it. Composite veneers do not have the same life expectancy that porcelain veneers have.
Once veneers have been bonded to the teeth they do not require any special care. Just continue using good dental hygiene, brush and floss as you always have.
If your teeth are in otherwise good condition but they are discolored or have surface imperfections the solution may be dental veneers. You are invited to discuss dental veneers in Mount Prospect with James Kakos DDS.
