Throughout India, many different types of organizations and groups exist to help others in need. It can be confusing to understand the different types of categories for these organizations and to understand what they do and how you can help.
The Importance of an NGO
An NGO trust is a very specific type of organization. NGO is an acronym that stands for Non-Governmental Organization. In other words, an NGO organization is not controlled, managed, or maintained by the Government of India, but the government may assist with funding. Typically, NGOs have a specific focus, which could be assisting communities and individuals in providing health services, nutrition and meals to low-income families, helping to provide education and to support underprivileged groups within the country.
A trust is also separate from government control, but unlike an NGO, an NGO Trust does not receive funding from the government. These can be private or public trusts, and they may be involved in a wide range of different services to individuals within India.
Some of the largest NGO trust charitable organizations work to provide the support that is not available through the government. They often work in collaboration with the efforts of the government to address immediate needs such as disaster relief or ongoing medical care for people in poor and underserved communities.
Getting Involved
Individuals can make donations directly to an NGO trust and receive a tax certificate. In addition, volunteers and special programs are often a focus of the trust over and above their ongoing projects.
Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust is an NGO trust that offers programs throughout India to help people in need. To find out more about our projects and options to get involved, see us at ratnanidhi.org.
