Your business could face a major decision this summer. For example, the cooling system is failing or perhaps it has quit working altogether. You have the option of buying a remanufactured AC compressor but you are not sure what to do. What exactly is a remanufactured compressor and is this the best option? Let’s look a little closer at this issue.

What is a Remanufactured AC Compressor?

Too often, people make the mistake of assuming remanufactured and rebuilt are the same thing. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. First, let’s look at what happens with a rebuilt compressor.

When a compressor fails it is traded in or sold to a company for rebuilding. Some of these companies are interested in one thing only – getting the compressor back into operating condition. For example, if the compressor failed because of a bad valve, this may be the only part replaced in some cases. The unit could have serious piston ring wear and the seals could be in terrible condition. Fixing the valve may solve the problem but you are sure to have more trouble within a short amount of time. In essence, you could be better off buying a used compressor from a reliable source. At least you will save on the costs.

The Remanufacturing Process

A remanufactured AC compressor is almost as good as new. Here are some of the things a reputable remanufacturing company does with their compressors:

 * Once the compressor is received, they drain all oil and fluids and dispose of them in an eco friendly manner.

 * After draining, workers completely take apart the entire unit all the way to the casting.

 * Vital components like seals, bearings and valves are removed and discarded. They are then replaced with brand new parts.

 * The casting is carefully inspected for signs of cracking or scoring inside the cylinder walls.

 * Pistons, crankshaft and inner components are inspected for signs of wear. If they do not meet industry tolerances, they are replaced.

 * The stator is tested to ensure it works properly. If not, a new one is made for replacement.

 * After replacing all worn parts and a complete cleaning, your remanufactured AC compressor is put back together and everything is properly tightened down.

 * Using nitrogen, the compressor is tested to ensure there are no leaks in the system.

 * Oil is then placed in the compressor and a thorough testing is done to make sure it is in prime operating condition.

 * You receive a 12 month warranty.
