Geothermal Heat Pumps Use The Temperature of The Earth To Operate

This type of system uses the ambient temperature of the earth to move hot and cold air through a home. A heat pump can heat and cool a home through a loop system with boreholes that will travel several hundred feet into the ground. The vertical boreholes are may be up to several hundred feet deep and a horizontal loop system will be installed that is approximately 10 feet deep. Direct exchange systems are ideal for moist soils because it uses copper tubing buried in the ground. This type of system does not use a heat exchanger but instead uses a pump system for the refrigerant. These require a larger compressor to be installed. Due to the refrigerant being pumped through the copper tubing, some locations may not permit this type of heating and cooling system to be utilized due to environmental impacts. For some systems, a newer method of installing the pipe can reduce the installation costs and can utilize a horizontal system that may not normally work in the area.
