As truly one of the world’s most amazing and preserved archeological sites, Machu Picchu has much to offer. For those who stream to this remote site, it is easy to see the attraction. The breathtaking setting is ideal. While it is possible to take the train to the sacred Sun Gate, it does not match the sensation of trekking to the site. For many dedicated pilgrims, nothing but becoming part of a Machu Picchu hiking tour along the sacred route of the Incas is capable of transporting them physically and spiritually to this site.

Hiking Routes

It is a common misconception to believe only one route leads to Machu Picchu. In fact, many different routes are open to avid hikers. They offer a variety of different experiences and demand a range of endurance skills. The three major options are:

1. The Inca Trail: This is the Classic Inca route to Machu Picchu. It is the one tourists opt for as the basic component of their Machu Picchu hiking tour. All tour groups offer this route. The actual trail can take 3 or 4 days to hike.

2. The Lares Trek: This 3-day trek winds through communities and impressive scenery until it reaches Machu Picchu.

3. The Salkantay Trek: A 4-day trek along this trail leads through stunning mountain scenery. It ends with a descent from the spectacular vistas of the Andes Mountains into a cloud forest.

All such routes lead to Machu Picchu; however, each provides hikers with different glimpses of current and past Inca life outside of Machu Picchu.
