As electronic circuit design becomes more advanced and high tech, it is becoming a major part of the World Wide Web and today you may see all kinds of devices with embedded sensors and circuits taking in, processing and broadcasting a wide range of data. Some of these things are for our entertainment while others are helping people live longer and more productive lives. Let’s take a look at the IoT (Internet of Things) and explore some of its many benefits.

What is the Internet of Things?

Today an entire network of things exists and they are all interconnected by one thing, the Internet. Many things today (which were only tools a few years ago) are becoming smarter and smarter. In order to better understand the IoT let’s check out some examples.

Smart Homes

Not long ago, you needed to oversee a household and everything was done manually. However, smart home technology with modern electronic circuit design features, can make life much easier and convenient. Suppose you get to work and you realize you forgot to set the home security alarm as you left. This is not a problem. Simply go online and contact your security system.

You get into bed one night but you are too tired to check the house and make sure all the lights are turned off. This can all be done from your smart phone or tablet computer.

When you get home from work, there is no need to look for keys. In fact, you don’t even need a pass code. Your home will unlock your front door for and it will know it is you and not a stranger.

Smart Cars

Cars are getting smarter and more efficient every year. Some vehicles can tell if you are getting too close to something and will make the proper adjustments. In addition, your car can stay in contact with the dealership and let you know when it’s time for service. In the future, you’ll be able to rest and relax on the way to work as your car does the driving.

Smart Cities

Thanks to advanced electronic circuit design and the World Wide Web, entire cities are becoming smarter. Municipalities can enjoy the benefits of environmental monitoring services. This helps to improve air, water and soil quality. In addition, smart systems may eventually provide early warnings for earthquakes and tidal waves. Smart technology can improve emergency response systems to save lives and make life safer for everyone.
