What do shelter dogs, rescue dogs, dogs from a breeder, and a puppy given to you by a friend have in common? They all require training. In fact, together with food, water, shelter and love, dog training is an essential part of owning a dog – any dog. It is necessary if you and your dog are to live safely, securely and happily as part of society.

What Is Dog Training?

There is no simple answer to this question; it means different things to different people and the same applies to dog trainers. If you watch TV, read a book or glance at the net, you are going to find many different opinions on this topic because many different people address the subject of dog training. Some of them are so-called experts and they have written books, have their shows, go on tour and even endorse their own line of dog products.

For some of these, dog training is a business and they recommend their methods. Some trainers adopt them while others adapt them, and others decry a certain method and support their own approach – or those of another professional. Like so much else in life, dog training can be big business but for some it is even their passion. This further complicates defining the term.

Types of Dog Training

Dog trainers usually follow a certain method of training. Two of the more common methods of dog training are positive reinforcement and dominance or Alpha.

Positive Reinforcement Theory

Positive reinforcement is the use of petting, treats or other forms of positive reinforcement to get the dog to pay attention and do what is requested of him or her. It is a reward system that may or may not be accompanied by the use of a clicker. Those who disagree with this form of dog training call proponents “cookie pushers.”

Dominance Theory

Dominance or Alpha dog training involves the asserting of the human owner as the boss or Alpha dog in the situation, and it involves the use of choke or prong collars. It may mean pinching the dog to correct a behavioral issue or yanking hard on the collar. Those who disagree with this type of training refer to its proponen ts as “choke folks.” They often consider the methods employed to be inhumane.

What Is the Right Type of Dog Training?

The problem with dog training is not its diversity, in fact, if you are a dog owner this may work in your favor. Rather than be forced to accept the only option, you have choices, so it is up to you to decide what method will best suit you and your canine companion.

Make sure you research each method: talk to the dog trainers in your area about their approach, consult those who have attended the trainer’s classes, sit in on a class or two and carefully watch, and be sure to notice how any dog similar to yours reacts to the method and the trainer. Only when you are certain your dog and you are a match for the method you should sign up for that particular brand of dog training.
