While most people will never need to see a specialist in endocrinology, these highly trained medical doctors are essential in working with patients who have health issues that include the endocrine system.

The study of endocrinology is central to many health issues as it involves the hormones that are produced and regulated by the endocrine system. These include hormones that control growth, reproduction, male and female sex characteristics, insulin, cortisol, and a wide range of other hormones and hormone precursors.

Often patients that have difficult to diagnose conditions will be referred to a specialist in endocrinology. This allows the treatment team to determine if a hormonal imbalance may be at the root of the symptoms the patient is experiencing.

When to Ask for a Referral

Generally most people won’t know to ask to see a specialist in endocrinology, but a family physician or other specialist may make a referral. Since hormonal levels control metabolism and all body functions, imbalances in these levels, or lack of regulation of hormone production, can cause a wide range of different symptoms that can be easily mistaken for other types of health issues.

With specific types of health issues, endocrinology may be a priority. Most commonly these include:

  • Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism which causes changes in normal growth and weight
  • Diabetes
  • Menstrual disorders and PMS
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Menopause
  • Andropause ( male menopause)
  • Adrenal disorders

Rarely will a patient only have support focusing in on endocrinology, rather it will usually be included as part of the treatment plan.

Ongoing Support

With hormonal issues, including hormone replacement therapies and issues with over or under production of hormones in the body, endocrinology will be an ongoing component of patient care.

This typically involves an annual visit to the endocrinologist as part of a wellness care program. Additionally, it may take regular appointments to create the balance in the hormone systems to alleviate the symptoms and allow the patient to have a normal, healthy life.

Often when endocrinology is a part of the treatment, the support from the hormone therapy or the monitoring of the hormone levels will go on for life. The good news is that this can be accomplished, and new treatment options can support the body and bring balance back into the endocrine system, often in a very short period of time once support and treatment are implemented.
