When your child is struggling with math one of the best ways to help them is to get them tutoring. This specialized one on one session is designed to help students succeed and have been proven to work over the last few decades. So, what should you look for in a math tutor for your child?

Area of Expertise

Math is a very broad subject and covers many different topics. While each of these is a form of math that is often where the similarities stop. A tutor who specializes in calculus is not going to be as adept at algebra as someone who mainly focuses on algebra.

Session Type

One on one tutoring sessions often offer the best results but can cost much more than group sessions held at tutoring centers. These group sessions are usually only a few students and are similar to one on one instruction. The type of session you choose will depend on your budget and how your child reacts with each option. You may have the budget for private lessons, but find that your child works better in a group setting.

Progress Reports

When you are paying someone to teach your child, you have a right to know when they are making progress and that you are getting what you paid for. Check and see if the tutor or tutoring center can provide some form of a progress report. If you are hiring another student to tutor your child, then you may have to wait to see a change reflected in your child’s grades.

When deciding on a Math tutor, you have a few options. You can choose to have your child get one on one tutoring sessions or save money by having them attend group sessions. You can also hire another student to be their tutor and save some money if they are not struggling too much. Each method has its own strengths and weaknesses, and you must find the one that is right for your child.
