You probably don’t find it unusual at all when someone tells you that they met their romantic partner online. In fact, nowadays online dating and matchmaking sites have become almost more common than traditional ways of meeting people. If you’ve recently jumped onto the online bandwagon, or are considering setting up a dating profile, don’t forget to keep your safety in mind. Even though it’s common practice and “everybody is doing it” doesn’t mean that you should get overly comfortable.
1. Be sparing with your personal information
Be mindful of the information that you include on your online profile. It’s wise to err on the side of caution when it comes to specifics about your location, name (using your last name is unadvisable), or other identifying information. Keep it general and brief; you can meet people in Boston without specifying your exact neighborhood, for example.
2. Choose your photos wisely
It’s wise to take a set of photos for your online profile only. Due to the power of reverse image search, you don’t want use the same headshot you use on LinkedIn, or use Facebook profile photos, for example. Your dating profile should be kept separate from your other online profiles, in order to avoid a deeper invasion into your personal life than you’d like.
3. Have a “phone date” first
If you’ve exchanged a few messages and things are going well, have a phone call! Speaking on the phone before you decide to meet can tell you a lot about a person’s personality and “vibe”. Remember, sometimes it’s difficult to convey tone or emotion through text alone.
4. Meet in a public place
This should go without saying, but meeting in public is much safer than meeting in an isolated area or at someone’s house.
5. Leave if you’re uncomfortable
This is important to remember. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut. Have a trusted friend or family member “on call” during your date so you can contact them if you need an out or if things go sour.
6. Go through a professional
Not all online dating sites leave everything up to you. You can choose a site that relies on matchmaking by a professional, and have your dates set up for you with pre-screened users just like you. This cuts out some of the searching and guesswork on your end.
Staying safe doesn’t have to detract from the joy of online dating. Just keep these tips in mind, protect yourself, and have fun!
