What’s an Ultrasound Transducer?

An ultrasound transducer included in our GE Vivid Ultrasound Systems is a medical device used with an ultrasound machine to produce images of the inside of your body. As an ultrasound imaging study is done, a technician applies a transducer to the region of interest, occasionally moving it around then changing the angle in order to gain a full view. The transducer both receives and sends sound waves, and the machine utilizes the information collected by a transducer to develop an image.

Ultrasound probes

Also, ultrasound transducers are referred to as ultrasound probes. They’re made with piezoelectric crystals, crystals that have unique properties that make them perfect for ultrasound applications. As the operator wishes to transmit sound waves, she or he utilizes the ultrasound machine to produce an electrical charge that deforms the crystal’s shape. As the crystals alter shape, they’ll emit sound waves that penetrate the region of the body in which an ultrasound transducer is applied.

As the sound waves reach the body, they’ll bounce back and again hit the transducer. The pressure of the returning waves will cause the crystals to alter shape again, and create an electrical charge that’s transmitted to the machine. The machine may interpret the data offered by the charge to develop an image of what’s going on in your body.

Operators manipulate settings

Operators may adjust the frequency, amplitude, and duration of the sound waves they emit using an ultrasound transducer by manipulating the settings on the machine. Different sizes and shapes of transducer are obtainable for certain tasks. For example, some run in a wide field that may be utilized to develop a generalized and large image, whereby other ones are narrower and smaller for imaging in more isolated areas of the body. A few probes are made to be inserted inside the body via the vagina, throat, or anus in order for the sound waves to have less barriers to pass through, for usage in imaging research in which better image quality is wanted.

Medical treatment and diagnosis

Ultrasonography may be a valuable tool in medical diagnosis and treatment. Utilizing an ultrasound machine, physicians may acquire images of what’s going on in the body without needing invasive procedures such as exploratory surgery. Also, ultrasound imaging may be utilized to observe things such as the process of a pregnancy, or heart health.
