What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a relatively simple cosmetic procedure to change the shape and size of the nose. It is used to shape the nose to something more akin to what the patient wants. This procedure involves reshaping the cartilage in the nose as well as the skin in order to either reduce the size of the nose or change the shape in many cases. So, what should you know about this simple procedure?

What is Being Done?

First you will obviously be sedated for the procedure, or at least get local anesthetics, but generally, you will be sedated for the procedure. After you are sedated, the surgeon will make the incision and move the skin out of the way. They can then begin reshaping the nose to the shape that you chose when you signed up for the surgery. This is done by reshaping the cartilage in the nose. Cartilage is softer than bone, so it is fairly easy to reshape and can be done so in a precise manner. Once the nose is reshaped the surgeon will correct the nostrils if needed, then close the incision. That is pretty much all that there is to it in most cases. This is obviously very simplified, and your surgeon can give you more details.

Does Insurance Cover it?

In most cases, no, insurance will not cover Chicago rhinoplasty surgery. If, however, you need it for medical reasons then yes, you can expect insurance to cover it, but you may have to fight for it. If your primary care doctor says that you need the procedure to breathe normally, then you should be able to get them to cover it. If you want to get rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, on the other hand, it will almost never be covered. Again, this will depend on your insurance, but in general, most insurance will not cover cosmetic procedures.
