The power of ionizing radiation is a relatively new phenomenon. This power can help to create weapons of mass destruction on a scale once thought impossible. However, at the same time, ionizing radiation can manufacture electric power, heal the sick, and give added years of life to millions of cancer victims. Materials like X ray lead shields are important for protecting patients and just as important for those working in the healthcare industry. Let’s take a closer look at this issue to see why the workers need special considerations.

The Dangers of Radiation

If you have a back problem, the doctor might order x-ray tests. This procedure uses a form of radiation to literally look inside the human body and explore the skeletal system. It’s routinely used to check for broken bones after injuries and look for signs of joint problems like arthritis.

If a woman receives a test involving radiation, the technician gives her an apron containing X ray lead shields to protect the unborn baby. Protective aprons are commonly used for several purposes, but what about the people exposed to radiation every day?

Radiation Accidents

A few years ago, the New York Times published several articles about the dangers or radiation therapy. They mentioned patients sometimes received lethal doses accidentally. However, few people seem concerned about the people working in these facilities. In fact, recent studies show many people only have minimal training in radiation safety.

More Shielding Needed

Workers should have more aprons and materials with X ray lead shields. This includes lead-lined glass and wallboard materials. Portable shields can protect workers also. This is especially important to those designing new facilities and upgrading existing buildings. There are plenty of shielding materials available, and ready for use. In fact, some companies specialize in lead products for radiation protection.
