The first 1 and a half months at most + 3-month Externship of the program consists of acquiring the academic knowledge you need to develop your understanding of this all-important industry. After that, you will receive hands-on, interactive training during an eight-week practicum where you will test your skills in various departments using an array of equipment and instruments.

Specific courses include microbiology, introduction to computers, interpersonal relationships, medical terminology, and surgical instrument practices. Skills acquired include safe sterilization procedures, documentation and maintenance of tray records and instruments, and cleaning instruments, equipment and supplies.

Once you’ve graduated from the course, you can take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician exam. While it’s not a requirement, it’s highly recommended, as it can open doors for other health-care career opportunities.

There are some pre-requisites that you must meet in order to be admitted to the program. These include:

*  Immunizations
*  Grade 12 or GED equivalent
*  Police background check
*  Current CPR certification
*  At least 18 years of age on the first day of class
