Here are a few handy pointers from Cosmopolitan to help you decide what nail care products to use in order to make your next home manicure last the longest:

. Make sure your nails are clean before you apply your basecoat. For an even better distribution, get a cotton swab and use that to wipe your nails down with white vinegar. After that, your nails are good and ready for a basecoat.

. Planning to paint your nails? Don’t soak them. While this softens the cuticles, your nails retain some of that water and expand. When you apply the standard 2 coats of color, this causes the nails to shrink back and you end up with too much nail polish on your nails. The fix? Use a cuticle oil instead of water.

. Color within the lines. Meaning, make sure none of the polish gets on your cuticles. This can easily lift the paint off your nail, which can lead to your polish chipping much sooner than you wanted or expected.

. Love quick-dry topcoats? If you’ve already got dry nails you better skip these. Using a quick-dry topcoat can only worsen the dehydration of your nails and cuticles.

. Don’t vigorously shake your polish up and down. That’ll give you bubbles in your coat. Instead, just roll it between your hands. This gets rid of the bubbles easily enough.

. Want polish that lasts longer? Go for a sticky basecoat. This will give your polish more sticking power.

. Don’t want your polish chipping up too soon? Apply two coats of basecoat to your nail tips. Given that our hands are always quite busy—from texting to typing to cooking—the tips of the nails are often more vulnerable to chipping. By giving your nail tips an extra basecoat, you’re putting on an extra layer of protection for your nails. This means no more chipped or worn-out nail polish, not any time soon at least.

. Think hand sanitizers are great? Wash your hands with mild soap instead. Hand sanitizers can cause your nails to dry which isn’t great for your topcoat either.

. See your nail polish chipping away? You can slow down that process by chipping your nail tips down and giving it another generous layer of topcoat. While that won’t keep your tips sturdy for long, it’ll slow down the chipping until you’re ready for your next nail care session.

So put these tricks in practice the next time you use nail care products. Give yourself better nails with these nail care products.
