If you are a new dog owner, you want to make sure that you are training them well. Here are some training tips from some of the top Chicago veterinarians in the area:

Don’t Push Your Dog

If you want to make sure that your dog is understanding their training, make sure that you aren’t dragging out the lesson for too long. When teaching basic commands, for instance, such as stay, sit, and come, make sure the training sessions only last for about 15 minutes. This doesn’t mean you have to totally stop after 15 minutes, but you do need to give your dog a break and prevent the training from getting too boring.

Give the Dog A Lot of Praise

You also want to make sure that you are praising your dog when he or she does something right. Most people don’t understand that dogs are usually much more focused when they are praised than when they get negative feedback. Take some time to think about how you are training your dog, and if you are training them in a good way. The more time you spend praising the dog, the better he or she will understand that they are doing the right thing. Without this, the dog will become confused, and you will likely get mixed results.

Prevent, Don’t Punish

When you make a training session all about the punishment for what a dog does wrong, you will make things tougher on both of you. Part of the training you do should be to make sure that the dog enjoys themselves, and this will make him or her want to follow the commands you give them. Instead of reprimanding the dog, stop him before he does something wrong. This type of prevention can help to free him or her of bad habits, and will make training a more enjoyable experience.
